Healthy Eating
Shared family focus on healthy eating.
Y4 devised (with children and their parents) a scoring system for healthy eating. They earned a point for each piece of fruit or portion of vegetables consumed, at home or at school. Parents completed the 'score card' with pupils and returned it to school daily. Each class totted up their points, and worked out a 'per head' number of points for the class, to make it fair. The winning class each week had an extra healthy play on Friday afternoon.
Parents said it made them and their children much keener to consume fruit and veg, to get enough points for a healthy break on Fridays. To motivate the children more, we decided to allow the healthy play for any class which had improved on their previous week's points score but they had to keep on the move. They devised 'follow my leader' activities and one of the teachers led aerobic-type fitness routines, which the children really enjoyed
Children are definitely eating more fruit, and the take-up of the free fruit at Key Stage 1 has increased as a result of the children wanting to gain their points. Parents report more enthusiasm for fruit and veg (both raw and cooked) and are pleased that someone other than them is encouraging the children to develop healthy eating habits. They are also pleased that their children are more willing to try a wider range of vegetables if only to get the points on their collection cards! Parents would like the free fruit initiative to be extended to Key Stage 2!
