Healthy Environment

Our objective
To involve children and families in an audit of the environment and action planning for improvement.

What we did
As part of the remodelling work we had been doing, we launched a Healthy Environment working group which consisted of staff, pupils, parents and governors. The group devised a questionnaire for the whole school community. We wanted to find out what works well (so we could improve and strengthen these aspects), what works so/so as we thought these might be lower priority areas for attention, and what works not so well so that theses areas could be part of an action plan for improvement. They also asked about the skills and knowledge people would be willing to offer.

How well it worked
The Healthy Environment group collected the questionnaires, analysed them and drew up an action plan to present to the Senior Management Team. We wanted everyone to see some immediate impact on the environment as a result of our work, so we looked for a very visible area that could be improved quickly, and decided on the dining hall, which everyone found dull and uninviting. We had the floor thoroughly cleaned, replaced the old curtains with bright blinds and got some huge pictures of fruit and flowers, and an assortment of green plants from IKEA, and transformed the room over the half term week.

Benefits we see
The group was surprised by how many people were willing to get involved and commit some time to improving the school environment (e.g. took a huge van to IKEA, got a discount for the blinds.) Because it happened over a half term week, people popped in to help for a while and the children could help or play together. The next areas for attention are the classrooms as parents thought that similar improvements could have an impact on the children's learning.
