Our objective
To make pupils more aware of the range of occupations available.

What we did
We arranged and education-business week and asked for parent volunteers to come in to school to speak to a group of children or class about their job. A letter home and lots of personal approaches enabled each class to have 3 visitors. If a visitor spoke to a group, they had the responsibility of reporting back to the rest of the class.

How well it worked
Parents were pleased to talk about their jobs, and children were proud that their parents came in. They were asked to make it sound interesting, and most did. The children wrote letters of thanks to the parents afterwards, and it really opened the children's eyes and minds to the huge range of possibilities in the wider world. Although initially nervous, all parents said that they were pleased they had done it and would do it again!

Benefits we see
Children show wider range of career choices, although it is too soon to know whether anything they heard had a lasting effect. One benefit to us was that so many working parents were prepared to take time to come into school - many employers gave time off and sent in publicity / information leaflets. The education/business week enabled us to make links with many parents we do not normally see.
