Our objective
To encourage parental involvement with their children on an enterprise project and to bring parents into school to share and learn skills.
What we did
We put children into teams and appointed parents as buyers, suppliers, bankers, consultants and judges. Each team of children had to design and manufacture a small range of masks for a Valentine's Ball party range. They had to be of a high quality and carry a company logo. Logo and masks had to be designed, materials had to be purchased and quality assurance standards met.
How well it worked
The children had to work in teams and share decisions and responsibilities. They had to work at speed with care, show entrepreneurial skills and support each other to meet deadlines. The parents had to adhere to the rules and once the prototype was approved, apply strict quality assurance procedures to ensure no shoddy workmanship!
Benefits we see
It was definitely an opportunity for children to work as part of a team to meet a deadline. The parents and other visitors were surprised at the maturity and creative skills displayed by the children. Timings were strict and children had to meet deadlines if they were to succeed with the task. Each team was awarded a prize - overall winner, neatest workers, friendliest team, most well mannered team etc. Parents really enjoyed being part of the project and all would like to participate again next year.
