Managing Money

Our objective
To encourage children to become familiar with using money.

What we did
The teacher took a shopping bag into the lesson containing supermarket items priced between 1p and 10p. The children had 10p to spend and had to decide what they could buy and how much change they would get.

How well it worked
The children were unused to handling money. They were very excited to be able to "buy" items, especially when they realised that they might be able to buy more than one thing. It was a very effective numeracy lesson, and led to the class shop being set up and different items (toys, 'food', shoes etc) for sale each day, all items clearly marked with prices

Benefits we see
We asked parents to complete tasks at home with their child; related to the work were doing in class. We also asked parents to allow their child to independently buy something at the weekend, and to complete a 'shopping report' at home with words and / or pictures. Children became far more aware of the use of money, and parents became aware of the importance of money as part of their child's education.
