Our objective
To ensure that the children are able to function as independent learners.
What we did
We had a half term focus on independence in learning - each lesson plan specified at least one aspect of learning that was to be independent, and wherever possible, opportunities for this to be extended out of school hours as part of our independent home learning programme. We held a workshop for parents to show them our approaches and gave suggestions as to how they could promote independence in learning at home.
How well it worked
This was a very successful way of structuring support for independent learning - from a tentative start, after half a term of building it in to everything we did, it had become part of the way we taught; the culture of our school. Parents liked it and liked the opportunities for independent home learning and most showed interest and were willing to work with their child.
Benefits we see
More parental interest and involvement in their child's learning; children are more independent learners and are willing to try different things and solve problems in situations where they would previously have been more teacher-dependent. There is real excitement in investigating and learning throughout the school. We believe that this will help every child to achieve their potential.
Comments
Children now tackle unknown problems and situations with much more confidence. We have replaced the word 'work' at our school to the word 'learning' and all children are aware of the effect that being an independent learner has on their education and future potential.
