Helping Others

Our objective
To encourage pupils and parents to help others in the community.

What we did
We held a Good Neighbours week when all pupils were asked, together with a parent or older sibling, to think about how they could help others in the community by being a good neighbour. The children had points awarded for each good deed undertaken, and their deeds were entered into a Good Neighbours book.

How well it worked
This proved to be a very easy way of engaging with the local community and of ensuring that our children did something to help someone else in a safe environment. It was stressed that they needed to be accompanied by an adult. Every child did something and friendships began to grow between parents and elderly neighbours. We will repeat this focus week each year.

Benefits we see
Children have the satisfaction of knowing that they have helped someone else. One class used the experiences for drama and writing. Good Neighbours week received positive coverage in the local paper, thus raising the profile of the school as an additional benefit
