Our objective
To encourage children and families to be more aware of actions they can take to ensure personal safety.
What we did
Our IiF steering group thought of ways that families could make themselves less likely to be victims of crime, by taking a few sensible precautions. We wanted to emphasise that many are common sense, and may be things people already do. We stressed that making yourself and family safer can sometimes be effected by making a few simple changes.
How well it worked
We thought about when and where our children and families might be at risk - out alone, using public transport, travelling alone, out at night and taking taxis. The steering group produced two 'personal safety' checklists - one for families and another one for children. The children's personal safety checklist was incorporated into PSHCE lessons. (See also the Government's Crime Reduction web site.)
Benefits we see
The children's personal safety checklist was incorporated into PSHCE lessons and children all show greater awareness of safety matters. Most pupils now wear the reflective discs we provided. The checklist provided a helpful focus for one of the workshops at the Parents' Association annual meeting.
