Safety Awareness

Our objective
To encourage safe behaviour when families cross roads

What we did
Our caretaker is the school crossing patrol person. He borrowed a plastic zebra crossing and portable traffic light, as well as a child sized coat, hat and lollipop. He went to the nursery and local playgroup to talk to the children and their parents about how to cross the road safely and to practise waiting until he told them it was safe to cross. He drew a 'road' then they took it in turns to cross the zebra crossing. They learned to wait for the green man to cross the road, and learned how to cross a road safely with an adult when there is no crossing place. Then the children took it in turns to put on the coat and hat, and he showed them how the 'lollipop' is used to signal to drivers that they must stop so that families can cross safely.

How well it worked
It was a very enjoyable, purposeful activity and the parents/carers and child minders joined in the fun.

Benefits we see
Families report improved awareness of the safe places to cross roads and children are enthusiastic about walking a little further to cross with the 'lollipop man' after his visit to the nursery. (Local Authority road safety departments often have the equipment which they can loan out.)
